Shiatsu Therapy

This is a non-invasive physical therapy used to encourage the body's self healing capabilities. Literally translated from Japanese, "shi" means finger and "atsu" means pressure. The technique involves the systemic application of manual pressure to the body in order to assess and treat a variety of conditions. From a physiological standpoint, it creates a normalizing influence on the parasympathetic (or autonomic) nervous system. The result then is increased activity of the internal organs to help detoxify and nourish all of the cells as well as decreased tension of the muscles.

Shiatsu Therapy is a distinctly Japanese holistic healing art. It has evolved from 5 to 10 thousand year old oriental medical practices. It is founded on the same principles as acupuncture except NO needles are necessary. Shiatsu Therapy has been used in Japan since 1964 as part of the public health care system. It has been popular in Great Britain as well as other parts of Europe for decades. Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy were some famous Shiatsu Therapy supporters here in the West.

Jocelyn uses techniques from gentle thumb pressure and light stretching to more intense elbow or knee pressure and full range-of-motion stretching depending on the client's tolerance, the area being treated and the nature of the condition itself.

Swedish Style Massage

Many massage clients are most familiar with this type of massage. The client is draped with a sheet so that only the immediate muscles being treated with a rich lotion are exposed at any one time. Through a series of techniques such as kneading and long, brushing strokes the client's muscles are encouraged to relax providing increased circulation that cleanses pain producing substances (such as lactic acid) from tired, tense and overworked muscles.

With Jocelyn's background in Oriental medicine, she is adept at finding tense muscles relating to her clients' patterns of discomfort that even her clients themselves may not have been aware existed. This tends to provide for better improvement of the discomfort as well as longer lasting relief.

Usui-Tibetan & Karuna® Reiki

Often translated as "Universal Life Force Energy," Reiki is the most gentle, calming, caring and non-invasive form of "massage." The western mind generally has trouble accepting Reiki without a solid, physically-based, scientific explanation. It is not necessary for the client to "believe" in Reiki for it to be effective.

Reiki was rediscovered in the late 1800's in Japan by "Dr." Mikao Usui. After extensive research into the spiritual healing of the physical body, such as executed by Jesus Christ or the Buddha, he read the ancient spiritual texts, including the Sutras, and found a formula. The formula was ineffective in itself. Usui went into a long, deep meditation and was blessed with a Satori or awakening. He was given the gift of healing and a method by which to transmit this gift to students. The story of Usui and other Reiki Masters goes on in detail. Needless to say, once someone is open enough to try Reiki, they do feel something, if only quite relaxed. Most clients report a hot sensation or a sensation that "tingles" when they allow themselves to experience Reiki.

The application of Reiki can be the actual laying-on-of-hands, that is, touching the body in a stationary fashion. Reiki can take the form of the practitioner's hands hovering over the body in the aura or it can be in a "prayer-like" form where the client needn't even be present.

Jocelyn usually combines Reiki with other healing modalities unless the client asks specifically and exclusively for Reiki. Often, she finds this Energy being channeled through her during a regular treatment. Reiki can be rejected by the unconscious of the client if it is not desired. She's found the most common and effective uses for Reiki in her practice include relaxing a client prior to more active methods of massage, treating otherwise contraindicated areas such as a broken bone or a burn, or accessing otherwise inaccessible wounds such as deep emotional blockages, psychological trauma or extreme cases of stress.

Jocelyn has on going classes in Reiki. The first degree of Usui-Tibetan Reiki is inexpensive, has no prerequisites and its practical applications are limited only by the imagination of the student. Reiki is a great introduction to meditation and a wonderfully caring way to reach out to family and friends in need.

Thai Yoga Massage

Born in the Buddhist monasteries of Thailand this technique is part Yoga, part acupressure and part massage. A regular session lasts one and a half hours and covers most of the body including the face, hands, feet and abdomen. It is based on Ayurvedic healing of ancient India with a Traditional Chinese Medical twist. The yogic stretches performed during this modality are tailored to the client's flexibility and comfort.

As with all of her treatments, Jocelyn gathers medical information about the client prior to commencement. Safety is her major concern. Jocelyn performs Thai Yoga Massage with the rhythm and grace of a dancer, the accurate pressure of a Shiatsu Therapist, the agility and concentration of a Yogini and the care and gentleness of a mother.
